How To Catch Someone Reading Your Private Emails

If you think someone is spying on you and reading your private emails you're probably right. Most people get an uneasy feeling when they are being watched or get a gut instinct when something just isn't right. In this case it's an uneasy feeling that someone has access to your private email account and they are secretly spying on you and reading your emails.

There are many signs that your email account has been hacked. Maybe people in your life seem to know things about you that they could not possibly have knowledge of unless they have read your private email messages. maybe you went into your mail box and found mails marked read that you haven't read yet. Or perhaps messages you have read are marked unread. Or items have been moved to or from your spam folder or recently deleted mail section.

Any kind of unusual activity or traces of activity that arouse your gut instinct that something is just wrong. If you feel this you have to trust your instincts and rely on that gut feeling. Hasn't it always been right in the past?

You have to be careful who you consult with about investigating a hacked email account. Friends and family may just tell you you're being paranoid or they may actually be the person that has somehow gained access to you emails. They may be the ones spying on you. You have to consult with a professional that has experience in this kind of investigation. Find a professional investigator familiar with the Internet and computer hard drive forensics. Find one that actually specializes in computer and email security investigations.

A private investigator that specializes in Internet investigations, email tracing and computer hard drive forensics will have the tools and software necessary to not only investigate and catch the stalker but also record and document their activity and reduce it to a report that can be used in court.

Most of all don't ignore the problem of a hacked email account. It's not going to just go away because you ignore it and bury your head in the sand. In fact this kind of stalking behavior can escalate if gone unchallenged. If a person is obsessed enough to go to the trouble to hack into your email account just to spy on you there is no way of knowing how unstable they are and how far they can take their obsession.

Howard Stern disputes authenticity of e-mail to RTM; uses PI Ed Opperman

Howard Stern is going from star of "Private Parts" to private dick.

The shock jock's satellite radio show recently enlisted the services of a Colorado Springs, Colo., private investigator to look into the origin of an e-mail sent to members of the Representative Town Meeting, attacking the character of longtime Stern sidekick/producer Gary "Baba Booey" Dell'Abate.

The Feb. 17 e-mail, which opposes Dell'Abate's candidacy for a seat on the parks board, came from a Internet Protocol address on the town's network, according to the investigation.

"I had a gut feeling from the beginning that it wasn't real because it was so over the top," Dell'Abate said. "I'm glad that it's been exposed as a fake. Whoever wrote it won't stand behind it, which gives it much less validity."

First Selectman Peter Tesei confirmed to the newspaper he has ordered the town's information technology director to look into the source of the e-mail.

"People should be discriminant in their behavior and use of e-mail," Tesei said. "It's wrong to do that."

RTM members received the e-mail on Feb. 17 from a person identifying himself as 20-year town resident Michael Obrien, who accused Dell'Abate of degrading women.

"He hires young women models, prostitutes and porn stars to go on his show just to have Howard Stern and other members of the cast (including himself) treat the women like garbage," the e-mail said. "In other cases, they have even put young girls in chains or tied them up and called them `slaves' as a `so-called' joke."

The e-mail's author, who questioned whether Dell'Abate is an appropriate role model for children, did not respond to a message from Greenwich Time.

"I honestly would not leave my daughters alone with this man," the e-mail said. "Please protect our community, daughters, young men and our fine parks from Gary Dell'Abate."

Dell'Abate's appointment to the volunteer board is subject to confirmation by the full 230-member RTM on March 14.

"It made me sound like I was a pedophile," Dell'Abate said of the e-mail during a recent sound bite on "Howard 100 News" on Sirius Satellite Radio.

Playing an advisory role in town government, the nine-member parks board has been a springboard for everything from beach-access policies and playground projects to park fees and a master inventory of available playing fields. Terms run for three years.

A resident of Old Greenwich for the past 16 years who is married with two sons, Dell'Abate was unanimously nominated in January by the selectmen for the parks board.

"There's one thing to have public debate, and then there's this, which is borderline libel," said Selectman Drew Marzullo, who recruited Dell'Abate for the job.

"I support any investigation that the first selectman feels is warranted. I also fully support Gary in defending his honor, but it's unfortunate that he has to in the first place. I will say this again, Gary will be an excellent addition to the parks board."

Tesei urged the public not to jump to conclusions about the e-mail's origin, saying that many people have access to the town's computer network.

"There are people who are now on town boards and commissions who have town e-mail addresses," Tesei said. "That doesn't necessarily mean it's a town of Greenwich employee."

The private investigator used by "Howard 100 News" was identified by program officials as Ed Opperman, who runs a website called www.emailrevealer.com.

Stern's show would not reveal the IP address that was used to send the e-mail, however.

How Long Should It Take To Trace An Email Back To The Sender?

Copyright (c) 2011 Opperman Investigations Inc

If you find yourself in a position that you need to hire someone to locate or identify the person behind an email address you may be wondering how long this type of investigation will take. The answer is sort of like the answer to the old question. How long is a piece of string? Obviously you cannot give a definitive answer of how long any investigation is going to take. Investigators have been searching for Osama Bin Laden for 10 years. However when it comes to an online email investigation we can take a look at the processes and procedures and get a rough estimate of how long the average investigation will take.

The average email trace investigation is going to involve a few common steps.

Step 1. Analyzing the email header, obtaining IP information, tracing the IP information back to the sender. many so called email trace investigations will actually begin and end at this initial stage and in some instances an instant search can be done that will return general information about the senders ISP in just a few minutes. Unfortunately these instant searches may be grossly inaccurate and trace the IP address of the recipient. Make the information recovered useless. If a professional is analyzing the headers they will take the time to manually analyze the header and return information not only about the senders ISP but also dates, geographic location and even the version of the email program the sender used. This professional may have resources at the senders ISP to obtain an exact identification.

Step 2. Database searches. While it may only take a few minutes to search a data base a professional email tracer will have access to hundreds of databases. Not just the instant ones you'll find online. a professional will have a check list of searchable sites that are in the deep web. These are membership sites that may require a monthly subscription. Some examples are resume sites, high school reunion sites, gift registry sites. These are searchable databases that must be searched manually and cannot be searched instantly or for free.

Step 3. Pretext investigations. A professional email tracer will have a bag of tricks already set up to contact the subject of the investigation and trap or trick the subject into revealing their identity or location. There is no way to estimate the amount of time it may take to trap the subject of the investigation but in some cases the longer this sate of the investigation takes the more evidence is being recovered an documented about the subject. Evidence that can be reduced to a report and turned over to police or used in a court of law.

There are many other steps in the average email investigation. some include comparing identifying information from the subject of the investigation to information obtained about a suspect in the investigation. Sometimes enough information can be obtained and documented that an exact match can be made. Positively matching an anonymous emailer to a known suspect.

As you can see just from this cursory summary of only a few of the steps involved a real thorough investigation into the location or identity of an email sender is far more involved than some simple online data base search. It takes time and manpower to locate, identify and document every step of the investigation.

Is It Possible To Recover Deleted Text Messages From A Blackberry?

If you have a Blackberry you may be concerned about recovering deleted text messages or as Crackberry users call them, BBMs. For some reason there's a lot of misinformation online about the Blackberry Text message recovery. You may find a number of self proclaimed experts in online forums and message boards that are quick to spout off uneducated opinions. It seems that many people think the procedure is difficult if not impossible. This is simply not true. In fact a qualified cell phone forensic examination of a Blackberry can recover an incredible amount of information. Far more than just deleted text messages.

Here is a list of just some of the information that can be recovered from a Blackberry with cell phone forensics:

- Auto Text
- Address Book
- Categories
- Calendar
- File System (form Content Store database),
- Handheld Agent
- Hot list
- Memo
- Messages
- Phone Calls
- Profiles
- Quick Contacts
- Service Book
- SMS / Texts
- Task

As you can see if you need information recovered from a Blackberry it's there. Of course you won't be able to do this yourself. You'll need to forensic software and tools plus the proper training in order to obtain the information you need. While you may just be looking for texts you can't overlook the wealth of information that is being held in these other areas of the Blackberry. For instance if you're concerned about infidelity you may find the evidence you're seeking in the call logs, calendar or address book. It is not wise to narrow the scope of your investigation. You should seek information from every possible area of the device.

If you need this information for court a qualified forensic examiner can carefully maintain the chain of custody, examine the device and produce a forensic report that you can use as evidence. The device is then returned to you undamaged and unaltered.

But even if you do not have a court case but just suspect infidelity or inappropriate behavior by a family member you can have you Blackberry examined by these same qualified professionals and have a personal report created for your own personal peace of mind. The information and peace of mind you can receive is well worth the expense of hiring the best professional available.

Is It Possible To Recover Deleted Text Messages From A Cell Phone?

It is possible to recover deleted text messages from a cell phone if you have the proper forensic tools and training. In fact a great deal of erased data can be recovered including but not limited to:

1. Detailed Call Logs
2. Address Book
3. Calendar
4. Memos / Notes
5. File System
6. Pics
7. Texts or SMS

Many times a person wants to recover deleted texts messages or SMS because they suspect infidelity. They hope to find incriminating evidence of their partner exchanging texts with a lover. They have no idea the amount of incriminating information that may be found in the call logs or calendar. A cheating partner may be careful not to mention sex in a text message yet they will store the address and or room number of the motel they are meeting their lover. So while it's important to recover texts we should not limit ourselves to just one portion of evidence and instead make a concerted effort to recover every possible tid bit of information and evidence available on that device.

Unfortunately many times when a person asks about undeleted text messages they are directed to SIM card readers that can only obtain a very small portion if the information available. The best forensic tools designed to recover data from a SIM card will only recover a few texts. At worst a cheap over the counter 'does it all" SIM card reader will actually overwrite the data you are seeking. It is unrealistic to expect the same kind of results from some cheap over the counter device you can buy online to the kind of professional examination and report you can have from a real professional forensic examination.

If you need this evidence for court the introduction of a do it yourself SIM card reader can render the evidence inadmissible. A professional can produce a detailed report from your device without altering or damaging it in any way. they can recover and document the evidence recovered in a manner suitable for presentation in court. If you are serious about recovering evidence from a cell phone be sure to trust your device to an expert that has the full range of tools required to do a professional job. taking a short cut will only short change you not only in the data possible to recover but in potential damage or destruction of the very information you are seeking.

Will A Reverse Email Search Investigation Work On A Gmail Account?

There is a lot of false information floating around about Gmail and the reverse email search. Many people seem to think that you can't identify the owner of a Gmail account using a reverse email trace report. They base this opinion on the belief that Gmail will strip the senders IP address from the headers. This is faulty thinking to say the least. First of all the IP address is not stripped from the header in every case. In fact in many cases you will be able to find the senders IP number in the header and you can traced that back to their ISP. This may also give you valuable information about the sender or at the very least the senders geographic location.

In some cases you can take that little bit of information and make a 100% accurate identification of the owner of the email address.

But let's say we need to identify the owner of a Gmail account and the headers have been stripped the IP information. All is not lost because that is only a very small part of a professional email trace report.

An experienced investigator will have access to databases with literally hundreds of millions of names and email addresses. If they investigate emails as a full time endeavor they will most likely have complied their own data base of emails on top of that.

Additionally an email investigator worth his salt will have a huge check list of online resources where people sign up for accounts using email address that have to be verified before they can open an account. Sometimes these accounts are directly connected to banking accounts or credit cards.

But even if it's a brand new email account and it was only created for the specific purpose of stalking and harassing you it's still possible to identify the Gmail account owner using good old fashioned investigative techniques. The kinds to tricks and traps that have been used for years by investigators to locate dead beats, runaways and bail jumpers. Many of these methods have been used successfully on a daily basis all over the world long before email was ever in popular use. Now with the Internet these tried and true proven methods are even more successful and even faster than ever before.

So don't believe the hype that Gmail is untraceable but don't let the cyber stalkers know that.

Stay Aware of Your Teens Online Activity With Computer Forensic Examinations

Almost every day, many of us sit in our homes and hear about dreadful headlines that always seem to make their way into the news. Many of these stories involve the Internet and tragedies that have occurred because parents were not aware of their teenager's misuse of the family computer.

Because of the dangers that many parents and teenagers are completely naive about that our kids can get caught up in before anyone even realizes what is taking place, there are numerous officials in law enforcement that are continuously doing everything they possibly can to educate our society on these dangers. Sometimes, however, their efforts are simply not enough. To ensure of the safety of our future generation, it is vitally important for parents to get involved as well. If you have a teenager or younger child in the home, it is vital that you continuously stay aware of their online activity. The most effective way to do this is with an investigation known as a computer forensic examination.

There are many teenagers that believe once they have deleted the tracks of their online activities that they are engaging in, that they have removed any possibility of their parents being able to find out exactly what they do while they are on the Internet. However, the opposite is actually true. Even after different types of data have been deleted from your teen's desktop or laptop computer, you still have the advantage of keeping yourself aware of their online activity when an expert private investigator is consulted to perform a computer forensic examination.

There are several different types of deleted data that you can have recovered from the hard drive of your teen's computer. There have even been teen runaways that families have been able to locate because of the data that was recovered from their PC's hard drive. In many cases, a computer forensic examination can provide you with the information you need to stop a serious situation before it has the chance to progress problems that could cause physical harm or worse, to your child. Deleted data that can be recovered using this preventative investigation includes files and documents that your teen has deleted, erased emails that they have sent and received, inappropriate photographs they may have sent to others and then deleted, and even detailed logs of chat sessions they have had with other people on messengers like Yahoo, AOL, MSN and various others.
